How to lose weight without changing what you eat – Lesson One

I’ve decided to take you with me on my journey to lose 40 pounds.  First, let me tell you that I’m a tall person, so my actual weight numbers are usually much higher than the average person, perhaps that’s helped me to place less emphasis on my actual weight, and more emphasis … on how my clothes fit. 🙂one should eat to live not live to eat

Like most people, over the course of my life I’ve tried many different ways to lose weight.  I could probably just cut back on things and amp up the exercise to lose 15 pounds and be comfortable in my clothes again, but I decided that this year I wanted to take a holistic approach and create a healthier life, not just a thinner body.

This is a not a promise to “Lose 10 pounds in a week” or “Magic pill” or “New diet”… in fact, I’m suggesting the anti-diet.  OH, one more… I’m not by any means saying, “eat whatever you want and never gain a pound”!  (back to what I am saying) I am suggesting that you stop dieting.

The literal definition of Dieting is: a regimen of eating and drinking sparingly so as to reduce one’s weight <going on a diet>

Let me ask you a question, when was the last time you took something away from yourself and you didn’t miss it?  When was the last time you thought about something you couldn’t have, and you didn’t actually start to want it more?  Deprivation is a short-term solution. THAT is why it never works in the long run.

The last time you lost weight, for the wedding, class reunion, summer vacation, what’s the first thing you started doing as soon as that event was over!?!  You probably started reintroducing those things that you have been going without to get to where you are.  You probably started “treating” yourself because you deserve it.

OR, what about those apple turnover’s you ate this weekend even after you made the commitment to yourself to eat better and be healthier… what were you thinking before?  Were you thinking, “well, I’m already fat, one more turnover won’t hurt.” or “I’ll start tomorrow, Monday is a better day to start”?

There are a lot of reasons that we all eat.  Some of us eat because we are in a hurry and fast food is easier, some of us eat because we are lonely, or sad and some of us eat because we have this feeling of never really being full.  The fact of the matter is, unless you are eating because you are hungry, you shouldn’t be eating.  Your body, your mind, you soul is asking you for something, and for years and years you have misinterpreted it as hunger for food.

I’m suggesting that this week.  Every time you pick up something to eat, I’m suggesting you look at what you are going to eat, you mindfully pay attention to what you are going to put in your mouth and ask yourself, “Am I really hungry, or is there another reason I picked up this piece of food”

Pay attention to what your intuition tells you, your first knee jerk reaction is probably more accurate.  For instance, the homemade bread is sitting on your counter.  You can’t walk by it without taking a piece.  Stop and think.  Am I hungry.  (if you’ve already had 2 slices you probably aren’t hungry) so now ask yourself “Why do I keep taking slices of this bread” and (my answer would be) “Well, because it tastes good”.

Good Taste = Happiness

I have a sudden and inexplicable moment of joy and happiness when I eat something I like.  If I allow this to go unnoticed, I might actually start to feel joy and happiness whenever I eat, and in the end may simply eat to try to recapture that feeling of joy or happiness.   However, any joy felt in eating is short-lived. Literally.  As soon as the taste is gone, the joy is gone and if I am living a life of deprivation or dieting, then I might even start to feel badly about having strayed… having indulged… having “treated myself” to the delicious apple turnover.

Lesson one:  Think before you eat.

Many times we eat out of habit. For instance, I used to work in an office where someone was always buying lunch, and one month I must have gained 10 pounds eating all of the donuts and cakes and pizza.  In retrospect, I had this idea that I couldn’t pass up free food.   I don’t know why, but I simply could not walk away from free food.  It’s been a while since I had that epiphany and it’s helped me to understand that I was not living in a life where I felt abundant, because I felt that I needed to take advantage of the “free” stuff because I might not have… does that make sense?

Think while you are eating.

Ask yourself with eat bite, is this the bite of food that has satisfied me?

So, this week, I’m not asking you to change anything that you normally eat.  Don’t change your shopping habit, however, I am asking you to pay attention to each bit.  Look at it before you put it in your mouth.  TASTE it.  Think about how it tastes.  Think about the reasons you like it, and tune into your body and ask yourself after each bite, “Is this the bite that satisfies me?”   If you are satisfied before your meal or snack is finished, simply pack it up and save it for later.

OF COURSE, if you are eating and you aren’t hungry, then ask yourself, “Why am I eating this now?”  and suggest to yourself, “Can I save this for later when I am hungry?”
